In celebration of our limited-edition Classic Six silk scarf launching this week, we had the pleasure of speaking with Meg Roberts, Design Director at Echo, a brand creating silk scarves since 1923. Meg's thoughtful approach to design has helped define the brand’s modern yet timeless aesthetic and we are so lucky to have worked with her in the creation of our very own Classic Six scarf. From her early beginnings in fashion to leading the 100+ year old brand's creative vision today, Meg shares what inspires her work and keeps her designs feeling fresh season after season.

What is your role and how long have you been with the heritage brand?
I am a Senior Design Director, and I have been with the company for 44 years! I have worked in every division – including the Core fashion line, Custom Design, Home and Loungewear licensing, and Polo/Ralph Lauren. I am currently overseeing the Echo100 Collection.
What was your very first job?
I began as a painter in a print design studio.
Did you always know you wanted to be an artist?
The short answer is “yes”!
What is your favorite detail or design element of the Classic Six scarf?
I love Donna’s black ink drawing because it has a wonderful, spirited personality.

What’s the one piece in your own wardrobe that you’ll never part with?
My perfect Banana Republic white tee. My old Frye boots. I know – that’s two!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received in your career?
Again – I have two. #1- (This piece of advice probably launched my career!) When I had to choose between an Ivy League school or RISD, literally everyone told me to “get educated first and then specialize in art”. Every person but my dad, who went to Harvard and never had a day of true enjoyment in his career. He said – “I know nothing about art except that it is very competitive. If you love it that much, go to RISD”. #2 - Don’t waste energy on things that don’t matter. (Easier said than done, but I’ve called upon it quite a few times!)
Was there a defining moment that shifted your perspective as a designer or creative?
I had an art teacher in high school who was a working artist. He took me one weekend to do a type of ceramic firing called Raku where you bury your bisque pots in a fire pit with organic combustible material and the heat and smoke create a beautiful crackle pattern. It was so exciting, but the result wasn’t controllable. Seeing an adult, a teacher, who lived life as an artist without all the answers was a revelation to me and inspired me to take on things outside my comfort zone and with no guaranteed results.
Who is your ultimate style icon — someone whose aesthetic you always return to?
Both Hepburns.
*How incredibly apropos as above is our Katharine blazer (named after Katharine Hepburn) styled with our Classic Six scarf!
If you could live in any other fashion decade, which would it be — and why?
The 40s. The clothes were simply beautiful. As much as I love creativity, when it comes to fashion styling, the flattering proportions and quality fabrics of the 40s were elegant and remain timeless.
If you could invite three classic icons (past or present) to dinner, who would they be?
Katherine Hepburn, Georgia O’Keeffe, Amanda Gorman.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
Emma Watson.
What does the word “Classic” mean to you personally?
Integrity of design that always looks good.
Quickfire:
Describe the classic six scarf in three words: Charming. Seasonless. Playfully chic.
Scarf styling tip you swear by? Just throw it on and don’t fuss!
Coffee or tea while designing? Coffee.
Morning person or night owl? Morning person.
Your favorite era of fashion? The 40s.
