INTERVIEW WITH JENN LEE

Where and when was the brand founded?

The brand was founded in 2018 in Bali, Indonesia.

What was the catalyst in starting the brand?

I was living in Bali and had picked up a woven bag from a local market. When I was in US for a wedding, multiple people asked to buy it off my shoulder. That sparked my interest in learning who makes them - which I quickly learned it was impossible to trace back since there were so many middle men. I decided to start the brand to work directly with the artisans to empower their communities and enrich their livelihoods… and to have a fun creative outlet!

Was there a design/fashion muse you can tell us about?

I’m inspired by the earthy colors and lines found in nature… specifically Bali. I also love a classic elevated resort look.

What is the dream for the brand in the next 5 years?

I would love to grow the brand to include classic resort wear pieces. When I was working remotely for a travel startup, I lived out of a carry-on suitcase for a little over 2 years and had a capsule travel wardrobe. I still reach for those same pieces every time I pack and would love to create a travel capsule collection of my own.

Do you have a favorite collection or piece to date?

The Baros Beach Tote.

What’s your favorite thing in your closet right now?

A vintage pink tweed Chanel jacket my mother-in-law handed down to me.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Is there one unforgettable defining time in your career that changed you?

I lived and worked in Shanghai in my early 20s. It was a vibrant and exciting city that solidified my love for culture, fashion and food.

Who is your style icon?

My grandmothers. Both had a casual elegance that I admired.

If you could be from any other decade (or era), which would it be?

60s

If you could have any three classic icons over for dinner – who would they be?

Michelle Obama, RBG, Barbara Cocoran

Best gift you’ve ever received?

Gift of travel - I love experiences over things.
